SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
The Metropolitan Club is a private Women’s Club Facility, located at 640 Sutter Street in San Francisco. It is comprised of a 110,000 square foot structure, constructed of two wings with different building types, joined seamlessly as one building with an integrated facade. The first building was constructed in 1915 and is a structural steel, five- story structure; the second was constructed in 1922 and is a reinforced concrete, six-story structure including an elevator lobby. There are 34 guest rooms used for overnight accommodations by members and guests. The building is listed as a Historical Building in the City of San Francisco and is on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
The KSD Group was first retained by The Metropolitan Club in 1999 to prepare a Needs Assessment Report evaluating the existing structure and infrastructure of the building and building systems. KSD interviewed, hired and managed a structural engineer, building architect and miscellaneous consultants to assist in the development of a Master Facility Plan.
Phase I of the Master Facility Plan was developed into the current project and approved by the Membership in 2004, which included seismic strengthening of the structure, architectural renovations to three floors, significant fire, life safety improvements, including a new six-story interior stairwell to provide safer egress from the high-density areas on all floors, renovating the swimming pool area, constructing a spa, sauna, private cabanas, ADA-compliant restrooms, exercise room, weight room, beauty salon and massage rooms. The challenge was in performing the work while the Club was still in operation, by closing selective wings on the floors. Construction began in the summer of 2007 and was complete in the summer of 2009.
